The global tin production is approximately 300,000 tpa with consumption this year (2006) forecast to reach 365,000 tpa. Demand Side Drivers- Tin is a “green metal” as it is inert – and is replacing lead in many electronic and chemical applications
- China consumed an estimated 100,000 t of Sn in 2005 and demand is rising
Supply Side Drivers- China, once a major exporter is now a net importer of Sn
- Limited investment in new Sn projects worldwide
- Small scale mining supplies >50% of all production but is more susceptible to social, political, operational and climate issues eg: China, Indonesia and South America
- US DLA sales cease in 2007
Impact- Market will be demand driven in 2006 – Europe switching to Sn based solders
- Indication of broadening demand-supply gap.
